Paving in Historic Newburgh

Asphalt paving in Newburgh often means working around history. Most of the notable buildings in the Original Newburgh Historic District date from 1850 to 1930, and the district is on the National Register of Historic Places. The town traces to John Sprinkle, who landed in 1803 and platted Sprinklesburgh in 1818, and Abner Luce, who founded Newburgh in 1829; the two merged in 1841. Newburgh had 3,344 residents in 2020 on about 1.5 square miles, at about 400 feet.

Older homes, careful work

Driveways at historic homes are often narrow, run beside the house to a detached garage or carriage house, and meet sidewalks and brick or stone features. We keep the width and edges appropriate to the property, plan transitions so water does not run toward the foundation, and use smaller equipment where access is tight.

The river

The Ohio River forms Newburgh's southern boundary. Lock and Dam 47 was built in the 1920s and replaced in 1974 by the Newburgh Lock and Dam, and the locks and dams completed in the 1960s and 70s protect much of the town from flooding. Lower lots near the river still collect water, so base depth and grading matter.

Underground history

The first underground mine shaft in Indiana was sunk in Newburgh in 1850. We cannot tell what is under any one property, but a driveway that keeps settling in the same spot deserves a closer look before it is paved over again.

Hot summers

Like the rest of the Evansville area, Newburgh has hot, humid summers, and asphalt needs proper compaction and time to cure. Sealcoating every few years keeps it from drying out.

Roads

State Road 66 runs through the Newburgh area. Driveways on Indiana state roads fall under INDOT; on town streets, we check the town's requirements before work at the curb.

Pricing

National guides list new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot (HomeGuide). Narrow historic driveways are small in area but take more careful edge work and hand placement. Sealcoating runs about $1 to $2 per square foot. Resurfacing a solid driveway costs about $3 to $7 per square foot. We list each part of the job so you can see where the cost goes, and we schedule paving from spring through fall.

Usually, by 20 to 30 percent according to HomeGuide, if the base is sound.
