Paving on the Floodplain

Asphalt paving in Lewisport has to deal with low, wet ground. Lewisport sits on the south bank of the Ohio River, in its floodplain, at about 397 feet, and the river has flooded the city repeatedly. It began as a ferry landing called Little Yellow Banks, was platted in 1837 and chartered as Lewisport in 1839, and had 1,767 residents in 2020 on just under one square mile.

Building on wet ground

Soil that stays damp loses strength, and a driveway on soft ground flexes under every car until it cracks. On floodplain lots, we dig out soft material, use a deeper layer of compacted crushed stone, and make sure the finished surface sheds water. After high water, a driveway that sat underwater should be checked for soft spots and washed-out edges before they turn into potholes.

Flat lots

With little natural slope, water has to be given somewhere to go. We build in a crown or cross-slope and look at the ditch or yard where it ends up. Where a driveway crosses a ditch, a culvert keeps water flowing.

Growth after 1960

Lewisport had 610 residents in 1960 and 1,595 by 1970, so many homes and driveways date from that growth. Driveways from the 1960s and 70s are well past their original life and are often patched. We check the base and recommend resurfacing or replacement accordingly.

Roads

US 60 runs east to west through the southern end of the city. The nearest river crossings are about 10 miles away in either direction: east at Hawesville and west at US 231 near Rockport. Entrances on US 60 need a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet permit for access. On city streets, we check local requirements.

History

Abraham Lincoln is said to have won his first case in the Pate House here. Logging and flatboat building were the first major industries, and lumber-related fires shaped the town's early history.

Pricing

On floodplain lots, the stone base is often the biggest variable. HomeGuide lists new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot nationally, with heavier builds using 8 to 10 inches of base; a deeper base on wet ground adds to the cost but is what keeps the driveway from cracking. Angi lists culverts at about $1,500 to $5,000. We list base depth, asphalt thickness and drainage separately so you can see the trade-offs. Repairs after high water are priced by the area that needs work.

Lewisport Questions

My driveway goes soft after heavy rain. Why?

Wet floodplain soil loses strength. A deeper stone base and better drainage fix it.

Should I check my driveway after high water?

Yes. Look for soft spots and washed-out edges and get them repaired before they become potholes.

Do I need a culvert?

If your driveway crosses a ditch, usually yes.

My driveway is on US 60. What applies?

A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet permit for access to a state highway. We check before entrance work.

Why is the base deeper on my lot?

Wet floodplain soil needs more compacted stone to support the asphalt.

How much does a culvert cost?

Angi lists about $1,500 to $5,000 nationally.

Can you repair flood damage?

Yes. We dig out soft areas and rebuild edges.
