Paving on the Green River

Asphalt paving in Calhoun takes place beside the Green River, the longest river entirely within Kentucky. Calhoun sits on its north bank at about 390 feet, and the Army Corps of Engineers' Lock and Dam #2 is on the river here. The town is the McLean County seat, a role it won in 1854 over Rumsey across the river, and it had 725 residents at the 2020 census.

Old settlement, low ground

Captain Henry Rhoads laid out the town as Rhoadsville in 1784-85, and it has carried several names since, including Fort Vienna. It was chartered as Calhoon in 1852. Much of Calhoun is low and level near the river. Driveways on that kind of ground need a solid stone base and a crowned surface so rain runs off instead of soaking in.

Small-town driveways

With under a square mile of land and many older homes, Calhoun's driveways are mostly short and often patched. Sealing, patching and resurfacing are common jobs, with full replacement when the base has failed.

Roads

KY 81 runs along Main Street, about 21 miles north to Owensboro and 23 miles south to Central City. KY 256 runs northwest to Beech Grove, and KY 136 crosses the north end toward Livermore. These are state routes, so entrances on them need a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet permit for access. On city streets, we check local requirements.

County-seat lots

The courthouse, churches and businesses around the center need lots that drain, stay smooth and are clearly striped. Restriping triggers the 2010 ADA Standards for accessible parking, so we lay out the required spaces.

Seasons

Hot summers dry out asphalt; wet springs test drainage. Sealcoating every few years and fall crack sealing keep driveways in good shape.

Pricing

On low ground, a deeper base is often the main added cost, and it is what keeps the driveway from cracking. HomeGuide lists new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot nationally and resurfacing at $3 to $7. For church and courthouse-area lots, HomeGuide lists striping at $4 to $5 per stall and $25 to $40 per accessible stall. We list each item on a written quote and schedule paving from spring through fall. After high water, we can inspect and repair soft spots before they spread.
