Frequently Asked Questions

Asphalt Paving Questions

How much is asphalt paving in Kentucky?

Published national ranges are about $5 to $12 or more per square foot for a new asphalt driveway (HomeGuide) and $7 to $15 per square foot (Angi). A 400-square-foot driveway runs about $2,000 to $4,800 in HomeGuide's figures. Your price depends on size, removal, base work and access, and we put it in writing after a visit.

Does summer heat hurt new asphalt?

New asphalt is softer during its first hot season, so it can scuff where tires turn in place. Proper compaction during paving, staying off it for the first few days, and varying where you park reduce that. After a few months it hardens, and sealcoating every few years keeps the sun from drying it out.

Water sits on my driveway after it rains. Can paving fix that?

Usually. On flat ground, a new driveway or an overlay can be built with a crown or cross-slope so water runs off. If the water has nowhere to go once it leaves the pavement, we may add a swale or a culvert. We look at the whole path the water takes.

Do I need a permit for a driveway onto a state highway?

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet requires a permit for access to a road on the state highway system, and its Permits Manual covers entrances. If your driveway connects to a state route, we flag it at the estimate. City and county roads have their own requirements, which we check.

How long does an asphalt driveway last?

Cost guides put asphalt driveways at 15 to 30 years. Base quality, drainage and maintenance decide where yours lands. Sealcoating every few years and sealing cracks in the fall make a real difference.

Can you pave over my gravel driveway?

Often, yes. If the gravel is deep and firm, it can be regraded, topped off and compacted as the base. If it is thin or mixed with dirt, more stone is needed first. We check before quoting.

When is the best time of year to pave in Owensboro?

Spring through fall, when the ground is warm and dry. We avoid paving on cold ground in winter, and during the hottest stretches of summer we schedule work to give the new surface time to cool before it is driven on.

Residential Driveways Questions

How much does a new driveway cost around Owensboro?

National guides list about $5 to $12 or more per square foot (HomeGuide) and $7 to $15 (Angi). An 800-square-foot driveway runs about $4,000 to $9,600 in HomeGuide's table. We price yours in writing after a visit.

Can my gravel be used under the asphalt?

If it is deep, firm and not mixed with dirt, yes. That can lower the cost of a conversion.

Do I need a culvert?

If your driveway crosses a roadside ditch, usually yes, so water keeps flowing. We look at the ditch at the estimate.

How soon can I drive on it?

Usually after a few days, longer in hot weather. We give you timing on the day.

How long does the work take?

Most driveways take one to three days. Long rural drives can take longer.

Commercial Paving Questions

How much does a parking lot cost?

HomeAdvisor lists about $2 to $4.50 per square foot nationally, or $400 to $1,130 per space; a 10-space lot runs about $10,000. Truck areas and drainage change that.

Can you pave our gravel church lot?

Yes. Existing gravel can often be used in the base, and we schedule around services.

Do we need a state permit for our entrance?

If it connects to a Kentucky state highway, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet requires a permit for access. In Indiana, INDOT handles state road entrances. We flag it early.

Can we stay open during paving?

Usually, with phased work and at least one entrance kept open.

Driveway Resurfacing Questions

How much cheaper is resurfacing?

HomeGuide estimates 20 to 30 percent savings over full replacement. Heavy patching reduces the savings.

Can resurfacing fix puddles?

Often, by leveling low spots and adding crown in the new layer. If the base has sunk, it may need rebuilding.

Will old cracks come through?

Some may over time. Sealing them before resurfacing slows that down.

How many times can a driveway be resurfaced?

Until the height at the garage and street becomes a problem; then the old layers need to come off.

Asphalt Patching Questions

How much does a pothole repair cost?

HomeGuide lists $100 to $400 for a typical pothole, plus minimum service fees of $100 to $250.

Why did my patch fail?

Usually because it was cold patch over a wet, broken base, or because the water that caused the pothole is still getting there.

Can you fix ruts at the top of my driveway?

Yes. The deformed area is cut out and replaced with properly compacted asphalt.

Will the patch match?

It starts darker and weathers toward the old color. Sealcoating evens it out.

Sealcoating Questions

How much does sealcoating cost?

HomeGuide lists $1 to $2 per square foot for driveways, about $600 on average. HomeAdvisor lists lots at about $0.15 to $0.30 per square foot.

How often should I seal in Kentucky?

Every few years for most driveways. Full sun and heavy use mean more often.

Can you seal in the summer?

Yes, in dry weather under about 95 degrees. On very hot days we work earlier.

Do I need to restripe after sealing a lot?

Yes. Sealer covers the old lines, so we schedule striping right after.

Line Striping Questions

How much does striping cost?

HomeGuide lists $4 to $5 per standard stall, $25 to $40 per accessible stall, and $500 to $1,200 for a 30- to 50-stall lot, plus a mobilization fee.

Does restriping mean adding accessible spaces?

Yes. The Department of Justice says restriping triggers the 2010 ADA Standards.

How many accessible spaces do we need?

One for 1-25 spaces, two for 26-50, three for 51-75, four for 76-100, with at least one van accessible.

Can you stripe after hours?

Yes, where practical.
