Asphalt Paving in Cloverport, KY

Asphalt paving in Cloverport means working in one of the older towns on this stretch of the Ohio. Founded around 1798 as Joesville, it was renamed in 1828 for Clover Creek, which meets the Ohio River on the town's east side, and incorporated in 1860. Cloverport had 1,119 residents in 2020 on about 1.5 square miles, at an elevation of about 489 feet.

Floods and fires

Major Ohio River floods hit in 1913 and 1937; in 1937 about 70 percent of residents were affected. A 1901 fire destroyed most business buildings, and a 1910 fire destroyed many homes on the east side. The town rebuilt in stages, so its housing is a mix of eras. Older driveways here are often narrow, patched and meeting the street at odd angles.

Creek and river

Lots near Clover Creek and the river sit low and collect water; higher lots slope toward them. On low ground we use a deeper stone base and grading that sheds water. On sloped lots we control runoff with crown, berm edges and drains at the bottom.

Railroad town roots

Railroad maintenance shops opened in 1892 and closed in 1929. Like many small river towns, Cloverport has older commercial buildings with small lots that need patching, sealing and striping more than full repaving.

Roads

US 60 runs past historic homes such as the Oglesby-Conrad House and the Fisher Homestead, and about 10 miles to Hawesville. In 1821 the Kentucky Legislature built a toll road between Cloverport and Bowling Green. Entrances on US 60 need a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet permit for access; on city streets, local rules apply.

Seasons

Hot summers dry out asphalt and winters bring freeze-thaw. Sealcoating every few years and fall crack sealing are the best low-cost protection.
